TTG. Chapter3. Childhood and you

    Summary for my reading: I feel much easier on reading this book today. I took only one hour on reading.

    Central question of this chapter: This chapter shows the natural and cultural surroundings of Su's childhood, and the relationships among Su's families. We could see that Su got right values from his mother, kept an intimate brotherhood with his brother, andsurrounded by a strong atmosphere of studying in school. It is the original reasons why he could be great.

    Words and natural expressions:

    1. underling 部下,从属。这个单词Eric第一天就列到卡片上了,然而没有记住。今天又一次出现了,get it。

    2. be subjected to 遭受,承受。这个词组上大学的时候综英老师强调了很多次,还是忘记了。出现在文中……The scholars were subjected to bodily torture...让我自己表达可能更多会用suffer, 或者take,不够活泼流畅。

    3. commit sth to memory这个词组叫牢记某事。commit又是一个我经常反应不过来的词,它有两个意思的方向,一个是犯错犯罪,比如commit murder, commit suicide(自杀),另一个方向是跟说话有关,叫做做出保证,承诺某事。比如这样一个句子:

    Anna wants to get married, but Bob's not sure he wants to commit. 安娜想结婚,但鲍勃却不能肯定自己是不是想作出承诺。

    4.barbarian 野蛮人。前两天老见这个词,今天记下它,出现在提到西夏,大辽,金国的句子里。

    5. no amount of 今天见它第二次了,做阅读的时候见过它,但不太理解,晚上又在...one began to know that book in a way that no amount of reading would give him...

    no amount of something

      used for saying that something will never be enough to have an effect

          No amount of training could have prepared him for this.

    这里no amount of.reading理解为读再多的书也不能如何。
