“clout”可以作动词表示“猛击”，也可以作为名词使用，表示“影响力”“权势”，今天我们就学习它的名词用法。   

clout 在棒球运动可以表示“猛力的一打”，正如棒球高手可以猛力挥打棒球影响赛况，有的人能够挥舞手中的权势影响社会。因此当 clout 作为名词表示“影响力”“权势”时，它比 influence，power 更有画面感。   

我们常说一个人或一家企业很有“实力”，很多时候都是在说他们有强大的影响力和支配力。比如我们想表达万达集团很有实力，就可以说：   

Wanda has/carries/wields considerable clout.（注意：clout 作名词使用时是个不可数名词。）   

再比如，最近美国大学爆出了“史上最大”的行贿受贿丑闻，涉案人员包括美国顶级律所合伙人、私募股权公司合伙人、好莱坞明星等，这些人都拥有权势。我们就可以说：   

Many of the parents involved in the recent college admissions scandal have tremendous financial clout. 

clout 的这种用法在《经济学人》中也极其常见，比如：

1）As politics grows more competitive, voters' clout will grow. 

2）America's financial clout translates directly into influence.
