Today is my first time attending the early bird pronunciation practice. If only one takeaway is allowed to pin down for today's session, I think mine should be SLOW DOWN.
Being afraid of falling behind, we're always in a rush: rush to go to work, rush to have fun, and even rush to finish a sentence. Sometimes, we rush when we are in a crunch time. At other times, we rush just because we are a little jumpy. We can easily get nervous when we're not well-prepared or not confident enough, such that we hurry to cross the finish line instead of taking a breath to enjoy the journey. While we might overlook the beauty along the way, we probably fail to catch our mistakes. To make it worse, we repeat those mistakes day in and day out without any self-consciousness.
I fall into the "rush” trap as well. Not until Eric brought this issue up repeatedly during today's session was I aware of my own problem. Eric had such a good ear that he was capable of telling subtle differences and mistakes. I guess he had gone through the same journey. When he walked us through his English learning journey, his lessons were of high relevance to the vast majority of newcomers. Although I didn’t get a chance to practice during the live streaming, my peer’s experience resonated with me powerfully. I’m grateful for joining in such a spiritual community where participants act as both learner and contributor.
Apart from pronunciation practice, picking up a morning routine plays a big role in my learning journey as well: a morning routine for learning. Even though I just make a baby step every morning, I believe incremental changes would eventually bring about significant improvements. Practice makes the master. That’s the spirit!
Calm down and slow down. Although it is easier said than done, I’d like to get started with the fundamentals.
