小词大用 第三期 gear up

今天，我们来讲解gear up这个习惯用语。首先，我们来看一个句子：

It may seem obvious that a stronger economy would rob Republicans of one of their best arguments for change in the White House in 2016, and give Democrats a boost as they gear up for the election.

这个句子来自于2015年1月3日的《经济学人》杂志。我们要如何理解其中的“gear up”呢？

事实上，“gear”一词指的是“齿轮”或类似的传动装置。装上齿轮，在一定程度上就做好了运行的准备。因此，“gear up”就表示“做好准备”。用英文来说，就是“to get ready for a coming action or event”。

说到“准备”，最容易想到的词是“prepare”。而“gear”这个词中的“ear”，与“prepare”中的“are”类似，这或许也算是一种巧合。

其实，“gear up”原本是指“换高速挡”。在这个意义上，它的反义词组就是“gear down”，意思是“换低速档”。引申之后，“gear down”也可以指“to reduce in scope or intensity”，即“减少；减缓”。例如，With less income you'll have to gear down your spending habits. 收入少了，你不得不减少开支。

如果我们不说“换高速挡”或“换低速档”，而只是说“换挡”，英语中是否有“change gears”这一说法呢？答案是“有”。但由于固定搭配，“change”要换成“shift”或“switch，变成“shift gears”或“switch gears”，意思是“to change one's attitude, course of action, methods, etc., in an abrupt, dramatic, or unexpected manner”，即“突然改变”。例如，In the middle of the second act, the play shifts gears from comedy to tragedy. 第二幕到了一半，这部戏突然从喜剧转成了悲剧。

“out of gear”，直译为“没办法上档”，也有“出了毛病”的意思，即“not in a good condition”。例如，我们可以说“My watch got out of gear and would not run.” 意思是“我的表出了毛病，不走了。”
