Air pollution has been frequently discussed in the past thirty years and attracts more and more heed from both governments and citizens. Till now, air pollution is not limited to the definition of bad weathers, such as acid rains, smog, the greenhouse effect, climate change but is related deeply to every corner of personal life, governments' plans and business production. Whether air pollution is mainly caused by human activities or not, human beings have to take actions to improve air quality. Just as president Xi Jinping once said, "To build an ecological civilization we should first adjust the activities of human beings and rectify human's wrongdoings from the previous actions of changing nature and conquering nature. We should build a harmonious relationship between humankind and nature."
Air pollution is harmful and takes much time and energy to control. However it is controllable if human beings have the determination to do it. When I first heard the following news, I was quite proud of those Chinese foresters. I believe as long as every citizen is willing to protect our planet with his own efforts, the air pollution will be curbed and cured one day.
Saihanba Afforestation Community from China was awarded the honor in the category of Inspiration and Action due to its efforts to transform degraded land into a lush paradise.
Saihanba, which covers 92,000 hectares, had by the 1950s become barren due to excessive logging, allowing sand to blow into Beijing from the northern deserts.
In 1962, hundreds of foresters began planting trees in the area. Three generations of these foresters have increased forest cover from 11 percent to 80 percent. The forest now supplies 137 million cubic meters of clean water to the Beijing and Tianjin areas each year, which discharging 550,000 metric tons of oxygen. It has spurred economic growth with green sectors, generating $15.1 million in 2016 alone, according to the release from the UN Environment.
