279、英语小故事（英汉对照）“如果我有电子邮箱”

A jobless man applied for the position of “ office boy ” at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.

一个失业的人去微软公司应聘办公室勤杂工。人事经理对他进行面试后又让他清理地板，目的在于考察他。

“You are employed,” he said. “Give me your email address and I’ll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start.”

“你被录用了。”人事经理说，“把你的电子邮箱给我，我好把你要填写的申请表发给你，还可以通知你什么时候过来开始上班。”

The man replied, “But I don’t have a computer, neither an email.”

那个人回答说：“可是我没有电脑，也没有电子邮箱。”

“I’m sorry,” said the HR manager. “If you don’t have an email, that means you do not exist. And who doesn’t exist, cannot have the job.”

“不好意思。”人事经理说，“如果你没有电子邮箱的话，那就意味着你这个人是不存在的。不存在的人是不能得到这份工作的。”

The man left with no hope at all. He didn’t know what to do, with only 10 dollars in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy a 10kg tomato crate . He then sold the tomatoes in a door-to-door round.

那个人绝望地离开了。他的口袋里只剩下10美元，他不知道该怎么办。后来，他去超市买了一箱10公斤的西红柿。接着，他就开始挨家挨户地卖西红柿。

In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital（资金）. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home with 60 dollars.

不到两个小时，他口袋里的钱就翻了一番。那天，他卖了三次西红柿，当他回到家时，口袋里已经有60美元了。

The man realized that he could survive by this way, and started to go every day earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled every day.

这个人明白了他可以靠这种方式过活，于是开始每天早出晚归地卖西红柿。就这样，他的钱每天不是翻倍就是三倍地增长。

Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet（车队） of delivery vehicles. Five years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers（零售商） in the US.

不久，他买了一辆手推车，接着是一辆卡车，然后他有了自己的运输车队。五年后，他成了美国最大的食品零售商之一。

He started to plan his family’s future, and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker（经纪人） , and chose a protection plan. When the conversation was concluded the broker asked him his email. The man replied, “I don’t have an email.”

为了家庭的未来打算，他决定买一份人寿保险。他联系了一个保险经纪人，然后选了一种保险方案。当谈话结束时，经纪人问他要邮箱。那人回答说：“我没有电子邮箱。”

The broker（经纪人） answered curiously, “You don’t have an email, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an email?！” The man thought for a while and replied, “Yes, I’d be an office boy at Microsoft！”

保险经纪人好奇地问道：“没有电子邮箱，你竟然也成功地建立起了这么庞大的销售网络。你能想象如果你有邮箱的话会怎么样吗？”这人想了一会儿，回答说：“我想我会成为微软的一名办公室勤杂工吧！”

只有在绝境中才能突破自我。
