Today I started another round of online training. The three speakers were all young scholars, but what they brought to us was far more insightful than the big names of academia. There was no nonsense in their lectures. Almost all of the content was of high quality and conveyed valuable resources and cutting-edge approaches. I was busy soaking up ideas and taking notes. I had so much going through my head that I could not even take a moment to go to the bathroom in the middle of the presentation.
On one hand, I appreciated their profound researches, brilliant ideas, and dedication. On the other hand, a feeling of envy and self-reproach rose in me: they are younger than me, but look at what they have achieved. And what about me? Am I a slacker or a fool?
Before typing these words, I thought about the gap between these young scholars and me. All of them have just completed their PhD programs: 2 in the US. They are still at the forefront of academia. Their knowledge and experience are based on the last 5-6 years of continuous research. Each of them has to present within 2 hours what they have accumulated over the past several years. My amazement at their erudition is only natural. I am a novice in this field, while they are old hands because of their experience. If I study the same field for 5 years, I too will become an expert.
All I need is patience, concentration and time, patience being the most important thing because it is the attitude. Only with the right attitude will I be able to give attention and time to this new field of study. Without patience, it is impossible for me to calm down and immerse myself in the monotonous papers and books for a long time. Only if I toil continuously in the field for 2 or 3 years will I produce something valuable and reap the harvest. So, do not be in a hurry. Just be patient. Focus on doing the right things and staying on the right path. Even if I progress slowly, I will arrive at the destination with a rich harvest.
Be patient! Calm down and carry on.
