In old China, government officials and educated elites, who embraced orthodox knowledge, created numerous narratives on reading, book-banning, and the need to eliminate superstition. Many of these narratives were chiefly targeted at the common people, with an aim of forbidding them from reading certain popular books, listening to certain dramatic works and believing in superstition.
