Forget me not: Google v France
① The EU has been making life hard for technology companies for years.
② Today it could get harder still.
③ The advocate-general of the European Court of Justice will publish comments on a case that pits Google against CNIL, France's data-protection regulator.
④ At issue is the geographical scope of the "right to be forgotten", which the ECJ ruled in 2014 applied to search engines.
⑤ It allows individuals to request the removal of personal information in some circumstances.
⑥ Google argues it should remove links only from its European websites (such as Google.fr).
⑦ Given that such geographic restrictions are easily bypassed, the CNIL counters that the delisting must be global if the regulation is to have meaning.
⑧ If Google loses, rules passed by the EU would have to be applied across the world.
⑨ The ECJ's judgment is not due until later in the year.
⑩ The court is not required to follow the advocate-general's advice.
⑪ But it usually does.
