    The American Midwest covers an enormous amount of land. It starts with Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. It goes as far west as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. There are a total of twelve states in the Midwest.

    Actually, the Midwest is in the east and central part of country. But, a long time ago, the United States was much smaller. The only states in the country were beside the Atlantic Ocean. So people called the lands west of them the Midwest.

    The land in the Midwest is almost completely identical. It is full of plains and prairies. The Midwest is very flat land. There are no mountains in it.Most hill only rise a few hundred feet high. However, the Great Lakes are in the Midwest. These are five huge lakes located between the U.S. and Canada.

    Nowadays, people in the Midwest often work in industry or agriculture. In Detroit and other cities, making automobiles is a huge business. However, there are also many famers. They grow corn, wheat, and other grains. And they also raise pigs and cows.
