In this chapter, Lewis opens up by telling the readers that everyone has warned him not to discuss the topics in this book—ChristianTheology. However, he has rejected that advice. In this chapter, Lewis particularly explores the necessity of Christian Theology. Again, he uses an analogy of “a man watching the ocean at a beach” and “a map” to compare the real experience of God versus the Christian Theology. He notes that if you want to go further, you have to use the map. In addition, he argues that Theology is practical, especially in modern days, as it equips us with the right ideas to recognize and dismiss the wrong ones. Lewis then clarifies the difference between “begetting” and“making”. Begetting means producing something of the same kind, while making means creating something different. What God begets is God, just as what man begets is man. What God creates is not God, just as what man creates is not man. He uses a series of analogies to illustrate this concept, such as a statue vs. a man, and a picture vs. a landscape. In the end, he distinguishes between Spiritual life and Biological life, even giving them different names—the former as Zoe and the latter as Bio.
