In 1917, America entered World War I and the country started to increase production to cater to the war efforts needs. Factories and farms produced almost double the usual amounts of ammunition, food and weapons. This called for an increase in employment and since most men were overseas fighting in the war, women were called upon. This marked the beginning of a new era for women. This essay will evaluate how far the roles of women have changed and where the roles of women didn’t change. The main ways in which the roles of women changed were representation, jobs and culture and the main ways in which women’s roles didn’t change is the way females were viewed, African American women’s rights and the keeping of traditional beliefs.

Women were viewed inferior compared to men in the 1920s because traditionally they were expected to do domestic work, which was viewed as a job for inferior people.

Evidence is, the targeted advertising of electrical cleaning products specifically for women. The invention of the modern electrical vacuum cleaner and washing machine were all made for women to have an easier time to clean the house. These products were specifically targeted towards female consumers because of the stereotypical belief that it was the responsibility for women to do domestic work. The stereotype that women doing domestic work was largely known and implemented.

This explains why women were viewed inferior because a large percent of people, including companies which made cleaning products, believed that women were responsible for doing domestic work, which was viewed as work for inferior people and therefore specifically targeted them in advertising.

Further evidence shows that even when the 19th Amendment was passed and women were given the rights to vote, women were not given political power and was denied the ability to make any decisions in Parliament. Their ideas were always viewed to be unreliable and cause a detrimental effect because people believed that the jobs, they did reflect on how they thought.

This explains why women were inferior to men, as the stereotyped jobs they were expected to do made an impact on their political status, preventing people from trusting them from participating in political activity. People who did cleaning jobs, washing jobs and/or domestic work were thought to be incapable to do any other task, which is why women were neglected political power and their ideas seemed unreliable.

However, during this time women were also seen as new, confident figures that did whatever they believed in and wanted. Women were more confident figures because many new opportunities, like disposable income, and the right to vote made them believe they were more independent and didn’t need to wait for men to make decisions for them. Women had represented themselves their way.

Affirmation of this is the rise of the ‘flapper’. The ‘flapper’ was a liberated, confident and carefree woman, that drank, smoked, drove a car, wore short skirts and cut their hair short. In the 1920s, this was wildly separate from the traditional norm and so many ‘flappers’ were considered to be ‘unfaithful’, but many young women were attracted to the freedom and carefree life a ‘flapper’ could live. By the mid-1920s, a large population of women in the United States were flappers.

This explains why women were more independent figures because they embraced their freedom and created a whole new culture for women that focused on self-embodiment, freedom and excitement.
