In the past, I had some bad online experience from some websites. For example, some website check-out process required too many steps that drive me crazy, and some websites had terrible designs that made me feel difficult to trust.
Then, I get interested in web user experience and want to research what kind of user experience will make people feel happy. Thus, I start learning User Experience for the Web from Open2Study.com. I would love to share my study notes and learning insight with you.
Key Study Notes From Course:
1. Overall of User Experience (UX)
User experience is designing all aspects of a person’s experience with a product or service.
User experience is influenced by disciplines such as:
Graphic Design
Psychology
Research
Anthropology
User Experience is all about end users, so about human behavior and how a user perceives
UX is underpinned by research, research being, researching what the user needs and how they’ll go about interacting with new products and services
2. Key Factors of Websites
Content-the actual information of the website
Tone/Language-tone of voice and language of the website
Usability-the ability for you to actually complete your task on the web
Branding-how the website makes you feel
Look+Feel
Images-visual elements and graphic design
Processes-the processes that you follow when trying to complete your task and the fact that the website tries to anticipate what you’re trying to do
My Learning Insight:
How do I evaluate the user experience of a shopping website?
When I visit a website, firstly I will see how the website look.Does it look attractive? Does it provide clear navigation? Does the image make me feel lovely?
Then, I will explore more details on the website.Does the information easy to read and understand? Is that information useful and valuable? Does the information answer my question?
Next, I will choose the product.Does the product show clear information such as price, size, color, shipping etc? Does the website allow customers to write a review? What’s the review score?
At the end, I will process the checkout. Is the product easy to add to a cart? Does the website pop up some special promotion code for my check out? If I am a new customer, can I check out without sign up a new account? How many steps take me to complete the transaction?
Most time, when a website provides multiple ways to sign up, I prefer to choose the easiest way to register such as using social media account to log in. When the check out process takes too long to complete, I am more likely to leave without finish the purchase.
Thus, when a website offers an easy and direct way to register, customers are more likely to become new users. When the checkout process only takes a few simple steps, customers are more willing to complete the transaction and get back to your site in the future.
Overall, a great user experience all about makes people feel simple, smart, and happy.
