As all we known, Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus, king of the Thebes in Greek legend. In this research, I would like to discuss about the reasonability for Antigone to bury her brother. In my opinion, if I was the judger, I would say that the behaviors of Antigone were legal. Hence, there are three reasons as below to show my perspective.
As a matter of fact, one of Antigone’s brothers betrayed to their country and assisted the army from the other kingdom to come and conquer their territory. Therefore, King Creon who is also the father of Antigone’s fiance punished her to death, and I’m pretty sure the punishment Antigone suffered from Creon was totally unreasonable. What’s more, the first standpoint for defending Antigone is the law which created by Creon with any reasonability. He created this low by himself, and the first rule in the law is to punish the people who betrayed the state, the one’s body is never to be buried. Furthermore, he filled with lots of passions for the law right up to the end. The most important thing is that he is above anybody else in the kingdom.(Theresa Snitchler, 2016) Also, “ whoever is chosen to govern should be obeyed - must be obeyed, in all things, great and small, just and adjust” said by Creon (R. D. Dawe. 2011). As a result, I don’t think this is the legal law to limit people’s behaviors.
Secondly, my next idea is that no one and no rule can be higher than the God. “Antigone ignored Creon’s forbiddance and buried her brother, this action based on her meticulous violations on the conventional family bond sanctioned by the highest of the lord. Moreover, the law of the God was the core for capability of resisting to express orders that infringe conscience.” (Colaiaco,2001) For me, I don’t have specific religion, but I do respect every god in different cultures.
Then, in my last point to rescue Antigone is that people should keep being brave and having independent thinking. “She is the one full of courage even when she suffered her life for justice and her family. What’s more her independent and brave attitude for Nature and Justice against unjust human laws is what electrified me.”(Markham, 2018).
It’s easy for everyone to have this kind of problem in the real life, for example, your supervisor might force you to help them do some bad things. Keep your own and clear perspective, moreover, to be brave to say no for someone forcing you.
Consequently, I would like to gather all of my opinions to defend Antigone. She is undoubted brave and thinking independently, even her uncle has the power to kill her. However, she still keeps her own values of burying her brother and following the law from gods without any fear and hesitation. Generally speaking, she is totally incredible, also she can be the ideal person for people to learn from her.
