袁大头是民国时期主要流通货币之一，"袁大头"是对袁世凯像系列硬币的口语俗称，严谨点说叫"袁世凯像背嘉禾银币"。辛亥革命以后，袁世凯就任"临时大总统"之职，后又成为正式大总统。当时，为了巩固国内政局稳定，发展民族经济，也为"制宪"和"称帝"作准备，于是发布《国币条例》，毅然决定在全国"统一币制"。
“袁大头”是对袁世凯像系列硬币的口语俗称，严谨点说叫“袁世凯像背嘉禾银币”。袁大头银元共有四种面值：壹圆、中圆(五角)、贰角、壹角，其中常见的为壹圆‘袁大头’，所以俗称的‘袁大头’主要指壹圆袁世凯头像银币。‘袁大头’由天津造币厂首先开铸，其后南京、广东、武昌、甘肃等地的造币分厂陆续铸造，由于其银两分量足、信誉好，成为民国时期乃至往后更长时间中国各地大量使用的通行货币。在众多袁大头银元中，民国九年的袁大头银元无疑是最少的。
