The age-old adage is true: First impressions last! Your interviewer has never met you before. Any correspondence which you may have had might have been through phone or e-mail. Thus, he does not know what you look like, and if his first memory of you is a head of unruly hair and a lopsided necktie, then he cannot help but associate your appearance to your character.
An untidy appearance shows that you are disorganized, incompetent and unprofessional—even if none of those are really true to who you are as a person. Although, one cannot help but wonder that if someone is unable to manage his hair, then how in the world would he be able to manage a high-stakes project or take on a high-profile brand? So before your face-to-face meeting with a would-be employer, check how you look in the mirror. For the ladies, check that your make-up looks fresh and not too overpowering. Wipe off those lipstick stains on your teeth and smudged eyeshadow.
