Part 2 Summary
In September 1996, The Taliban took the city, Kabul. Rasheed thinks the Taliban were united and takes Laila, Mariam and Aziza outside to see the Taliban themselves. The Taliban forbids students from being in school, shuts down schools, cinemas and many stores. Laila sometimes feels satisfactory about her father's death, because he does not have to be tortured by The Taliban. Rasheed notices that the color in Aziza's eyes do not look like his or Laila's. Meanwhile, Laila finds herself pregnant again and she tries to abort the child in her belly by using a metal spoke. In the end, Laila could not do it, realizing that the unborn child is innocent, especially in times of war.
one day in September 1997, Laila is giving birth to a baby in a hospital, which is extremely overcrowding and unsanitary. Mariam shoves and pushes the crowd, begging the doctor to help Laila. Seeing the sight in the hospital, Mariam understands the sacrifices a mother made and Nana's motherhood. At night on that day, a female doctor operates on Laila without using anesthetic. Laila finally delivers a baby boy, Zalmai.
Two yeas later,a drought falls over Kabul and Zalmai turns two in 1999. Rasheed spoils his son and spares no effort to buy new clothes, toys, even TV for him, but he still pays no heed to Aziza, who has been a calm and pensive girl. While Laila loves the two children with the marrow of her bones. Rasheed's business worsens and he plans to let Aziza beg in the street. Laila firmly refuses his requirement. Rasheed slaps Laila severely for her refusal, but this time Laila punches him in defiance rather than to bear Rasheed's beating. Rasheed is so furious that he shoves the gun into Laila's mouth to threaten her. The Taliban raid houses and confiscate valuable stuff overtly. Laila and Mariam have to bury their the television in the hole. Laila dreams Mariam and she lower Aziza into the hole rather than the TV, which makes Laila woke up in fear.
Part 3
that sometimes in war innocent life had to be taken. Her war was against Rasheed. The baby was blameless. And there had been enough killing already. Laila had seen enough killing of innocents caught in the cross fire of enemies.
