Secret Superstar is an India musical drama movie. It says the coming-of-age story of a teenage girl who aspires to be a singer, and her relationship with her mother. The film deals with social issues including feminism, gender equality and domestic violence.
What touches me depply is the feminism in the film. Najma (Insia's mother) suffers severe family violence. Once, Farookh(Insia's father) broke her arm because she just forgot to boil water. There are lots of things like this. But Najma never say no to her husband.
Insia constantly encourages her mother to divorce her father. She thinks Najma shall fight for herself. But her mother refuses and thinks that is her fate and she has to accept it.
At the end of the movie, Najma stands up to Farookh when Farookh destroys Insia's dream and let her marry to a stranger in Arab.
As mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. So we each one should be tenacious in defense of our rights.
