Dear fellow Toastmasters, you know Doreen, don’t you_the senior member in our club who has just celebrated her baby's 100 days party. New mothers in my WeChat are just the same, they cheer for almost everything that happens on their babies. “Today, My babe can rise his head!”, “My babe can eat with hands”, “My babe smiles all the time!”……

This sounds funny to us but is seriously important to babies. Actually, parents are the first CONFIDENCE GENERATOR  to their babies. Although they cannot understand the words, they are sensitive to love and encouragement, which serve to generate their confidence and curiosity towards the world.

However, as we grow up, we tend to be more independent, develop new demands that need different CONFIDENCE GENERATORS  at different stages of life, like good scores at school, good performance at work.  CONFIDENCE GENERATOR that works for us today might not work tomorrow.  For example, during my childhood, my mom’s encouragement could always boost my confidence, like Doreen and her son Huanhuan .  But as I grew up, it was no longer true.  My mother has recently been very proud of me successfully finding a job in a big company which I myself didn’t think was an outstanding achievement worth such a big appreciation.  Her attitude therefore did not improve my level of confidence at all.

In my second year of university,  I switched my major from engineering to marketing hoping to train my analytical skills. Before that, I was a 6-years science student with above-average grades as my confidence generator. I got used to the “visible performance”, like being the top 5% highly performing students in the class starting from primary school all the way to the first year in university.

However, the new major had no exams but teamwork and case study. Teachers scored the homework with personal criteria into three grades: outstanding, standard, and low-quality. It seemed that my visible confidence generator was useless and most of the time a standard score confused me a lot…If I was just an average student in the new major, did I make the right choice?

When I was down and low, I met a group of people in 706 Youth Club. I saw the various possibilities of life no matter if you have good academic performance or not and felt the comfort of being myself instead of being trapped in the constant comparison with others to gain personal accomplishment. So I started to change my idea and demand of being a top student and joined the club as a long-term volunteer and organized a speech salon as my first marketing practice.

This platform offered me chances to try new things and make mistakes  to gain experience and confidence as a marketer. As I reminded myself, “Find my own style of communication.” We updated the objective of the salon and then by making regular promotions, improving member's experiences, packaging operations documents, we successfully introduced the speech salon into other cities like Tianjin and Xi’an. 706 Youth Club was a very important CONFIDENCE GENERATORS  in the university.

Last year, I came to a new stage of life nd found the need to be more professional not only for communication but also for my career life. So it is the time to update my CONFIDENCE GENERATOR.

I was lucky enough to meet you guys, my dear Toastmasters that offered me chances and courage to be a better self! I don’t know how far I could go, I only hope this could be a life-long CONFIDENCE GENERATOR.
