Many participants were arrived on the venue quite early, after registered. We were not allowed to enter the training room. At that time Jeff was busily checking everything he needed for training. The participants had to chat with each others, getting familiar. Small groups were founded, and remained for the 2 days training.
Comments: Persons in a large group do not want to be along, so they will meet with others and get talks.
At the beginning of the training, D85 Champion Bob was invited to give a speech in front of all the participants. We are all familiar with Bob, but we didn't know Jeff at the beginning. By Bob telling us Jeff is the man behind his success, the man helped on polishing his speech draft and stage performance. We are immediate built trust on Jeff's ability as a speech coach.
Comments: Using some one people all knows to introduce self, it will be more convincing.
Jeff told some personal stories by engaging with us. He said he failed in college examination and asked us to guess the reason. Our curiosity was arose, and keen to listen to him for the answers. He fell in love with a young girl and joined the air force, and lately became a drillmaster, and leave the army, he continued to training others.
Comments: People love stories and gossip, when hearing other's personal story, we would like to know more. The connection is getting closer, and break the ice.
Why am I here?
Set the intention of the 2 days training. We tend to do the job more effetely if we we know the purpose.
To learn professional presentation and training skills. So I can stand in front of the public, and transfer the knowledge I know into a lecture to let others know. Presentation skills is very important if you want to sell something to others. I wish one day I can benefit from speaking skills not by manipulate orders but by sincerely tell others the things I truly believe.
Engage with your audience
- Have a chat with the audience like friends.
- Tell lots of true stories.
- Show vulnerability / humility
- Ask and listen
- Force audience to participate.
Jeff applied all above tips on his course. By telling his personal stories, we got connect with Jeff, and we were forming groups quite smoothly.
Presentation Pyramid
1. The purpose
The purpose of my presentation is to inspire and infulence the audience, so that they will have further action,so the presentation MUST have message.
Find out what the audience interested in, and prepare for the things they want. Find out the desicion makers. Find out what they alread know, and what they want to know.
I would like to XXX, so that YYY will be happen
2. Three main points to support your purpose
Only 3, no more no less.
3. Three supporting materials to suppourt eachmain poins.
You can list as much as you can when brainstorming, then trim them into 3.
Design the eye catching openning
If you cannot cath the audiecen at the openning, you are hard to catch them later in the speech.
Design the closing
Repeat the message again at the closing, as people have a bad memory. Get them emothinal.
PPT rules
- Font - 30pt minimum, you can use as large as a possible
- Images - high resolution as possible you can find
- Template NO
- Special effect NO, it may not working on the equipment at the venue
- One point one slide - you can use as many slides as you want. Six lines six words per line.
Simplicity makes the audience know the essential for your training. You are the focused one of the audience, not the fancy slices. Do not let the slides distract your audience. Concentration is the gold, do not let gold run away.
Group discussion
Concentration and engage, the audience will get bored for period more than 10mins. So you need to add energy to the training, switch to group discussion. Change their mode from listening to thinking and speaking.
On the beginning of group discussion, move around to make sure the audiences are fully understanding your purpose this section. Ask them to stop a few seconds to correct them.
Presentation and feedback
Ask each group to present their result of the discussion. Let those on their seats listening to give comments and feedbacks. So both presenters and listeners can get the core contents of the training section. You just need to control the time, and add comments and things need to pay attention. In this section, you act as a facilitator, instead of a training. The audience can learn from each other and be more memorable of the things they leaned. Because of participating in it,instead just listening, they applied the skill immediately into the practice.
