    Words & Expressions

    1.splutter

    General Macarthur spluttered out: "What's going on here? What kind of a practical joke was that?"

    explanation: to speak quickly and with difficulty, making soft spitting sounds, because you are angry or embarrassed

    e.g. His fathered spluttered with indignation.

    2.utter

    He passed through and immediately uttered an exclamation of satisfaction.

    explanation: to make a sound with your voice; to say something.

    e.g. She did not utter a word during lunch.

    3.unobtrusively

    The mouth of the trumpet was against the wall, and Lombard, pushing it aside, indicated where two or three small holes had been unobtrusively bored through the wall.

    explanation: (formal, often approving) not attracting unnecessary attention

    e.g. Dora slipped unobtrusively in through the back door.

    4.roll up

    Told me to roll up here.

    explanation: (informal) to arrive

    e.g. Bill finally rolled up two hours late.

    5.run one's eye over 

    He twitched it out of the other's hand, and ran his eye over it.

    explanation: to look at or examine something very quickly

    e.g. Could you just run your eyes over this report?

    Like the judge, Lombard's eyes wandered slowly round the room. They rested a minute on the open window, then he shook his head decisively. Suddenly his eyes lighted up.
