Dorothy west is a black novelist who helped shape the Harlem Renaissance in the early 1900s. This quote comes from her acclaimed 1995 collection of stories and essays "The Richer The Poorer", in which her characters share this frame of mind and understand the fragility of life and see no purpose in sentimentalizing the past. Instead, they suggest he live in the moments each day has to offer, and we cherish what we have left.
When we were children, time seemed stand still and we were frozen in place, feeling as if our youth is infinite. But as we get older, we recognize that our elders were right. Life does go by in a blink of an eye. Time becomes harder to hold on to, and suddenly we're left longing for the moments that were so precious, so bittersweet, so defining. But there is no use in mourning what we've left behind. It is not until we let go of the past that we can really learn to live. It's the only real way to slow down time and embrace life as we did when were children, free of regrets, open to new possibilities, and ready to know all there is to know on the road ahead.
