This film has a perticular historical importance, being the first time a romantic scene shown on public media since the end of the Cultural Revolution, singalling the end of oppression over human emotions. Chinese girls those days dreamed of being able to wear the clothes that Zhou Jun wore and have a romantic relationship with a man like Geng Hua.
The younger generation Chinese may not know this well, but anybody who is aged 35+ should.
