They made me the guest of honor, they treated me like a king. They even had a present to give me, gift-wrapped and everything. A sweater. And when Katherine arrived with the News reporter, Ed Kirkman, and the photographer, Gordon Rynders, Josie made them sit down and join in on the festivities.

It was after midnight before we got to the airport for the trip back. It had begun to snow by then and I was shivering in the thin topcoat they had given me. No sooner had we settled into the little five-seater than the pilot told us that the heater wasn’t working and we were going to have to stay in a motel overnight while it was being fixed.

“No, we’re not,” I told him. “We’re going to go to New York.”

“Do you mind freezing? Look, if you want to brave the cold I’ll brave it too, but I want you to know that if you think it’s cold down here on the ground it’s a lot colder up there.”

I didn’t care. “On Christmas Eve I’ve got to be in New York. If the reindeer can take it, so can I.”

Well, we weren’t in the air for ten minutes when the heater suddenly started to work. It was, no question about it, my day for miracles.

We came in over LaGuardia at about two o’clock in the morning and it was a sight I’ll never forget. The whole city was still lit up. I saw a million colored lights illuminating the oblong squares of the city streets; I saw a thousand necklaces of red, green, amber, and white strewn across the town. I saw huge crosses of lighted bulbs standing out in bold relief against the towering skyscrapers. And in the harbor I saw the Statue of Liberty holding her torch up high.

It was such a breathtaking spectacle that for the first time in the entire trip Katherine forgot how scared she was and let go of her death’s grip on my hand. “Do you now believe in miracles?” she squealed. “Do you now believe that the angel on my shoulder was telling the truth? Do you now believe in God?”

I believed, I believed. I believed in miracles. I believed in the angel on her shoulder. I believed in God. “But just remember, Katherine,” I said as the little plane flattened out and headed for the runway. “We had a plan.”
