Jacky Li is 12 years old. In February and April 2020, he independently and excellently completed the painting and summary of the works of the Chinese Forbidden City.(the following works are summarized and shared in the way of Jacky)
First Painting: Wall of Palace Museum
This was the first of the paintings that I drew in the extensive Palace Museum Project, and, although it wasn’t the most detailed of pieces, or the most difficult of pieces, it was the first of its kind that I drew. This particular piece focused mainly on the wall, however, the wall was portrayed through an entryway that was completely black, in order to further accentuate the vibrant colors of the wall itself. In order to correctly display this, I had to create a sort of outline along the edges of the entryway. What I did may not have been perfect, however, considering that this was my first time attempting painting in such a style, I’m pretty satisfied with myself.
Second Painting: Roof (1)of Palace Museum
To me, personally, this piece was a great accomplishment. One of the aspects I love about Chinese painting is the colors, and all the shades you can make out of them. Another aspect I love about Chinese painting is nearing the end of a project, and getting to paint the backdrop. The backdrop is just so beautiful, and I’m so happy whenever I get to paint it. As seen, this painting is the two of these combined, and I am so proud of my execution of both. Not to brag, but this painting is definitely one of my best. To fully bring out the colors in the backdrop, I decided that the part that was architecture, the roof, would only be an outline. The rest of it would then be colored completely black. After that, I went completely wild with the color, first adding blue, purple, and reddish purple. This was originally supposed be nighttime, however, Ms. Gong and I both thought it was too dark, taking in the fact that the roof was black. Therefore, I decided to add orange, yellow, pale red, and touches of white. The final result was the roof of the Palace Museum set against a brilliant sunset, and to be honest, I don’t think I could have done anything better with this piece.
Third Painting: Roof (2) of Palace Museum
After painting one piece of the roof of the Palace Museum, I decided to paint another piece, however, this piece had to be the exact opposite of the last one. This means that the roof was colored and shown in great detail, while the backdrop was just plain white. The colors on the roof were very symbolic, for the Palace Museum was a building of great importance. Therefore, all the colors were symbols of wealth and high status. Examples are peacock blue, gold, yellow, emerald green, ruby red, and many more. Of course, in this painting, there weren’t all that many colors, however, the whole building was extravagantly lathered in these colors. As a counterpart to my previous roof painting, these two paired together look fantastic, and I think this was a job well done.
Fourth painting: Corner(1)of Palace Museum
building of Palace Museum Out of all the paintings I completed, this piece is probably my favorite. As with the first and second piece, I tried a technique I never had before, which was drawing reflections in the water. I feel as if the reflection was done perfectly, and the effect it had on the overall painting was stunning. However, this wasn’t the only part I loved about this painting. A fact about myself: I am an absolute craze when it comes to detail, and I pay very intense attention when it comes to architectural details. The corner building, which was the main architectural piece, I spent a painstakingly long time in, and I think it was worthwhile, every second of it. For starters, the building is perfectly symmetrical, which is very hard to execute, and the scale of it compared to all the other parts of the painting fit perfectly. The touches of gold along the outline add to the intricacy of the piece, as does the brilliant backdrop. Overall, this painting was absolutely fabulous, and I could not have been happier with it.
Fifth painting: Corner building (2) of Palace Museum
This was one of the two paintings that I drew on the rectangular boards, and they are the main two pieces of this Palace Museum project. This project was mainly focused on the corner building itself, instead of the heavy sceneric view presented by the other piece. For my part, I feel like I did pretty well, though it wasn’t my best performance by any means. However, the piece played the part that it needed, and the backdrop of light and dark blue was pretty nice, a color I haven’t used for that purpose in a while.
Final painting: Palace Museum
This was, by far, the hardest and most time-consuming project I have attempted, ever, and I am very pleased with the way it turned out. Seventy percent of this piece was all architecture, so the scale of each building needed to be precisely calculated, and the colors of the painting had to become paler as it receded in the distance, which is extremely hard to execute. There was so much packed into this painting, and all of it had to be shown separately and clearly. The whole theme of this piece was to show ancient Chinese architecture in its grandiose and glory, and I added a bit of modernness in the background, a nice little touch that I think helped the piece overall. This is definitely the main piece of the Palace Museum project, and there is definitely the perfect painting for this role.
