昨天收到一封邮件，打开一看是邀请去参加一个聚会，信后有一句“ Be there or be square” ，当我看到这一句的时候，有点露怯了，“要么去，要么方，这是什么鬼？”看到这一句的时候我真的“好方”，但是又有点似曾相识的感觉。心里嘀咕着，我淡定地在手机上长按-复制，打开谷歌翻译，我恍然大悟，瞬间想到了孙楠的那首《不见不散》。

脑子里不断回荡着悠扬的歌声，同时电影《不见不散》中葛优的形象也开始在大脑中闪现。这一次，估计这个短语应该能形成永久记忆了。但是我还是有点疑问，be there or be square为什么就是不见不散呢。带着疑问我又开始了对这个短语的探索之旅。

感觉有不少老外对这个短语也是充满好奇，满屏的提问都是这个是什么意思，来源是什么，为什么表示这个。看了一圈下来，发现关于这个短语的解释也是莫衷一是，五花八门。这里我就挑了两个感觉靠谱有意思的说法搬运过来。

不喜欢爵士乐的人很“方”

在这个短语里，square应做形容词，square以前就包含“honest, fair, straight, direct”（诚实，公平，正直，直接）的含义。然后1944年以后，又出现了另一种含义“old-fashioned”，用来指那些过时的，墨守成规的人。好像和爵士乐有关，因为爵士乐代表了一种反叛，反主流文化的特征，所以不喜欢jazz这种新生事物的不就是传统的人吗。那为什么管这种人叫“方”呢，据说是来自指挥家的手型（具体我也不懂，这里只负责搬运）。所以，如果说某人不喜欢爵士乐，就可以说他square（保守），因为爵士乐是具有反主流文化的。所以，当有人说Be there or be square时，就可以这么理解：

If one declines to attend an event, one is considered “uncool.” It implies that the event will be exciting. Someone who doesn’t attend is boring.
我们的活动很有趣的，很酷的，你不来的话就说明你太不酷了。

因为人不是圆的，所以就是方的咯

这是个谐音吧，原来不止中国人用谐音，老外也一样用谐音啊。举个例子：

小A：There‘s going to be a party tonight, Be there or be square!
一脸懵B：What does that mean？
小A：Be there or you are being a square because you are not a-round man.
二脸懵B：Nobody wants to be a square. （所以还是乖乖赴宴吧）
