During the period when Su was in his prime, he was involved in the political turmoil as a consequence of his criticizing the government. In Hangzhou, he was full of vitaity, always ready to express his feelings regardless of consequences for himself even if he knew his lines could travel fast to the capital. So it would not be so surprising to see these comments were collected by those who had an axe to grind, being sufficient evidence to convict him of disrespect for the ruling regime. Many of his close friends also got implicated in his trial and were either degraded or deprived of ranks. Coming out of the prison gate, Su shi set his heart on spiritual renovation and started to live a life as a recluse, fully engaged in farming and Buddhism. However, what lay deep in his soul, was Confucian sense of duty toward one's fellow man.
In such a state of mind I receive so freely the bounty of nature spread before me.
