The Kite Runner

This time, I'd like to read you a clip fromThe Kite Runner, the first novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini.

It's a sweeping story of the unlikely friendship between Amir and Hassan: one is the son of a wealthy Kabul merchant while the other is the son of a servant. In the novel, Amir abandoned his friend and fled to America. But so strong was the bond between them that Amir journeyed back to Afghanistan to seek redemption — by rescuing Sohrab, Hassan's child.

The clip chosen here is the ending of the story. Amir took Sohrab back to America, and tried to make him speak or smile. But his attempts failed because traumatic memories took away Sohrab's laughters and dimmed his eyes. However, a miracle happened in the spring of 2002, and that had something to do with a kite.

“There’s a way to be good again.” As the novel unfolds, we are at first filled with indignation when witnessing Amir’s betrayal against Hassan. We grieve over the parting of the two friends. We are heart-broken upon knowing what Sorhab had been through. But the pain is soothed and healed in time, because in goodness we trust, and there’s always a way to be good again. Maybe we all carry some painful memories, but with renewed courage, we move on with a clean slate. Dry your tears and keep your eyes wide open, you might find that kite in the sky.
