Words and phrases

Teddy and I got along like a house on fire, one of those friends where you start hanging out and from that day forward you’re never apart.

like a house on fire  very quickly, successfully, or strongly

get along like a house on fire

I like to visit my neighbor because our two children get along like a house on fire.

Madonna's new CD is selling like a house on fire.

It was grainy, black-and-white security-camera footage, but you could see what was happening plain as day.

例句:...grainy black and white photos.

It's also possible that the original picture was blurry or grainy.

其他意思:表面或质地粗糙的;粒面的 having a rough surface or texture, or containing small bits of something     例如:the grainy tree trunk...

We bolted, heading for the doors.

I saw a man bolt out of our backyard.

My heart was pounding.

I could feel my heart pounding as I went on stage to collect the prize.

He pounded on the door demanding to be let in.

You’ll miss part of it, someone might translate on the fly to give you the gist, you pick up the rest from the context, and you just figure it out.

A student scrambling to finish some homework on the school bus is working on the fly.

A teacher who instructs the class without planning a lesson is teaching on the fly.

For a moment my mom thought she’d caught me red-handed, but Teddy’d given me a solid alibi.

The false alibi threw the police off the scent.

Thoughts

I kept waiting for it to be a trick, for them to turn and say, “It’s you!” They didn’t. At a certain point, I felt so invisible I almost wanted to take credit. I wanted to jump up and point at the TV and say, “Are you people blind?! That’s me! Can you not see that that’s me?!” But of course I didn’t. And they couldn’t. These people had been so fucked by their own construct of race that they could not see that the white person they were looking for was sitting right in front of them.

Teddy was dark.Trevor was light.

Summary

At Sandringham, Trevor got to know Teddy, and they got along like a house on fire. They often hung out together. One night they were at the mall. Walking past a stationery shop that sold chocolates, they realized that if they put their arms through the trellis they could reach this rack of chocolates just inside. After they stole some of them, they found these were alcohol-filled chocolates. They loved these alcohol-filled chocolates, so they did this several times. However, One day, when they were doing this again, they were witnessed by mall cops. They ran immediately, with mall cops coming at them. At last, Trevor escaped, but Teddy was arrested for shoplifting. As a result, Teddy was expelled by school. Teddy told police that another kid wasn’t  Trevor. The picture on the camera screen wasn’t great, and Trevor's facial features were a bit blurry, so they didn't think it was him.
