Assessment: formative & summative
Summative assessment: End of a chapter/unit/markingperiod/year/level
Formative assessment: all the things we do in between or on the way
Formative assessment: Informal & Formal
Formal: quiz, test, project, performance (all these are graded and recorded).
Informal: games, activities, guided practice, quizzes if not graded, rough drafts, homework, projects, observation.
Differences:
Informal assessment is used to monitor and adjust instruction.
Formal assessment is:
Used to monitor and adjust instruction.
Recorded to monitor progress.
Shared as an evaluation.
“Traditional Instructional Cycle”
Goal: use the language to (talk about family / findthe main idea) at (a novice / an advanced) level.
1. “Learn” the language required.
2. Learn the customs/history connected.
“TCI Cycle”
Use the languageto get knowledge about something in the world.
Goal: to acquiremore language in order to get a deeper understanding.
