The lingustic genius I know—Teacher Arthur

Teacher Arthur is one of the lingustic geniuses that I know. Every time I was with him, I'd have a whale of a time. His knowledge of lingustics, English education and writting is the eternal attraction to me. His sincerity, integrity and consistency also speaks for what a reliable person he is.

I got to know Teacher Arthur in an English speech activity in 2015. Back then, I was delivering my first speech in my entire life. I was quite nervous, and my poor pronunciation added to the difficulty with which the audience had understanding what I was talking about. Amazingly, Arthur, as one of the audience, got the structure of my speech with ease and put forward several interesting questions. He even praised that my speech had a clear and logical structure. In comparison with other evaluators' comments on pronunciation and the speech content, Arthur's attention was paid to the way how the speaker think. I was deeply impressed by Arthur's idea at the very first time meeting with him.

Later, I got to know that Arthur used to be a lecturer at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and became the teacher of the writting part of SAT. His students were almost all from the top senior high schools in Guangzhou. My dream was to be a writer, which made me admire language teachers, especially composition teachers, from head to toe.

I started to have a gut feeling that Arthur was a genius of lingustics after I noticed how fast he read original English books. Original English books were quite hard for me to read. However, Arthur could read them just at ease.

He'd tell me the books he read recently and the shining parts of them. As for the book I'd been struggling to comprehend, he'd devour that book in a short period. It always rings a bell of him when I hear of people who can read quite fast.

Take Amy Tan's Joy Luck Club for the first instance, I spent over 1 year reading this book, and ended up having no idea what it was exactly talking about. In contrast, reading that book took Arthur less than a week. And Arthur even encouraged me to read it for it was a good book. Then take Culture Theory for the second instance, it is a book about the patterns of culture and ways of thinking. Arthur went all out recommending this book to me. Sadly, reading this book was a process restarting from scratch again and again----no matter how many times I read, I could not get a clue at all, so I have to read from the beginning again and again and ended up in failure. For me reading that book was just trying to bite more than I could chew.

My admiration for Arthur is plain as the day. What I could talk today is just tip of the iceberg when it comes to Arthur. I'll talk more in the future, for the topic about friends and teachers is never a back number.
