    New Year resolutions

    /njuː/ /jɪə/ /ˌrɛzəˈluːʃənz/

That was really unsettling, but I fended off the taunts and

    /ðæt/ /wɒz/ /ˈrɪəli/ /ʌnˈsɛtlɪŋ,/ /bʌt/ /aɪ/ /ˈfɛndɪd/ /ɒf/ /ðə/ /tɔːnts/ /ænd/

jibes of the family good- humouredly and soon everybody

    /ʤaɪbz/ /ɒv/ /ðə/ /ˈfæmɪli/ /gʊd-/ /ˈhjuːmədli/ /ænd/ /suːn/ /ˈɛvrɪbɒdi/

got used to the idea. However, my enthusiasm waned. The

    /gɒt/ /juːzd/ /tuː/ /ði/ /aɪˈdɪə./ /haʊˈɛvə,/ /maɪ/ /ɪnˈθjuːzɪæzm/ /weɪnd./ /ðiː/

time I spent at exercises gradually diminished. Little by little

    /taɪm/ /aɪ/ /spɛnt/ /æt/ /ˈɛksəsaɪzɪz/ /ˈgrædjʊəli/ /dɪˈmɪnɪʃt./ /ˈlɪtl/ /baɪ/ /ˈlɪtl/

the 11 minutes fell to zero. By January 10th, I was back to

    /ðiː/ /11/ /ˈmɪnɪts/ /fɛl/ /tuː/ /ˈzɪərəʊ./ /baɪ/ /ˈʤænjʊəri/ /10th,/ /aɪ/ /wɒz/ /bæk/ /tuː/

where I had started from. I argued that if I spent less time

    /weər/ /aɪ/ /hæd/ /ˈstɑːtɪd/ /frɒm./ /aɪ/ /ˈɑːgjuːd/ /ðæt/ /ɪf/ /aɪ/ /spɛnt/ /lɛs/ /taɪm/

exhausting myself at exercises in the morning, I would keep

    /ɪgˈzɔːstɪŋ/ /maɪˈsɛlf/ /æt/ /ˈɛksəsaɪzɪz/ /ɪn/ /ðə/ /ˈmɔːnɪŋ,/ /aɪ/ /wʊd/ /kiːp/

my mind fresh for reading when I got home from work

    /maɪ/ /maɪnd/ /frɛʃ/ /fɔː/ /ˈriːdɪŋ/ /wɛn/ /aɪ/ /gɒt/ /həʊm/ /frɒm/ /wɜːk/

Resisting the hypnotizingeffect of television, I sat in my

room for a few evenings with my eyes glued to a book. One

    /ruːm/ /fɔːr/ /ə/ /fjuː/ /ˈiːvnɪŋz/ /wɪð/ /maɪ/ /aɪz/ /gluːd/ /tuː/ /ə/ /bʊk./ /wʌn/

night, however, feeling cold and lonely, I went downstairs

    /naɪt,/ /haʊˈɛvə,/ /ˈfiːlɪŋ/ /kəʊld/ /ænd/ /ˈləʊnli,/ /aɪ/ /wɛnt/ /ˌdaʊnˈsteəz/

and sat in front of the television pretending to read. That

    /ænd/ /sæt/ /ɪn/ /frʌnt/ /ɒv/ /ðə/ /ˈtɛlɪˌvɪʒən/ /prɪˈtɛndɪŋ/ /tuː/ /riːd./ /ðæt/

proved to be my undoing, for I soon got back to my old bad

    /pruːvd/ /tuː/ /biː/ /maɪ/ /ʌnˈdu(ː)ɪŋ,/ /fɔːr/ /aɪ/ /suːn/ /gɒt/ /bæk/ /tuː/ /maɪ/ /əʊld/ /bæd/

habit of dozing off in front of the screen. I still haven't given

    /ˈhæbɪt/ /ɒv/ /ˈdəʊzɪŋ/ /ɒf/ /ɪn/ /frʌnt/ /ɒv/ /ðə/ /skriːn./ /aɪ/ /stɪl/ /hævnt/ /ˈgɪvn/

up my resolution to do more reading. In fact, I have just

    /ʌp/ /maɪ/ /ˌrɛzəˈluːʃən/ /tuː/ /duː/ /mɔː/ /ˈriːdɪŋ./ /ɪn/ /fækt,/ /aɪ/ /hæv/ /ʤʌst/

bought a book entitled "How to Read a Thousand Words a

Minute". Perhaps it will solve my problem, but I just haven't

    /ˈmɪnɪt"./ /pəˈhæps/ /ɪt/ /wɪl/ /sɒlv/ /maɪ/ /ˈprɒbləm,/ /bʌt/ /aɪ/ /ʤʌst/ /hævnt/

    had time to read it!
