Words & Expressions

1.devoid of

Everything was plain and straightforward, a modern structure devoid of concealments.

explanation: to be completely lacking in something

e.g. His face was devoid of any warmth of humour.

2.furtive

A soft furtive footfall overhead.

explanation: behaving as if you want to keep something secret

e.g. There was something furtive about his actions

3.festoon

They were dirty and festooned with cobwebs and their faces were grim.

explanation: to cover something with flowers, long pieces of material etc, especially for decoration

e.g. Malaga was festooned with banners and flagers in honour of the king's visit.

4. blurt something out

He said, almost blurting out the words...

explanation: to say something suddenly and without thinking, usually because you are nervous or excited

e.g. Peter blurted the news out before we could stop him.
