    Dialogue【Motivating Employees】

Nicole, I'm telling you, I'm done.
I've had it with this place.
Tomorrow I'm going to quit my job, book a plane ticket to Greece,
and spend the rest of my days in a little village drinking wine and sleeping in the sun.
    Is something the matter, Greg?

To put it gently, my team is the least motivated group of people that I have ever managed.
I like them, but trying to get them to do anything beyond the bare minimum is impossible.
It's like I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs.
    And it's driving me crazy.
    I'm sorry, Greg.
It sucks to lead a team when no one feels motivated or committed.

    the bare minimum: 最低限度
    suck: 令人讨厌

What do you think the problem is?
Honestly, I think it has to do with the senior employees on my team.
There are a few people who have been here longer than I have.
Though they do pretty good work, they're also not giving it their best.
For example, they sometimes come in late and always leave the moment it turns 5 o'clock.
    It's sending a bad message.
Now my new employees have started to do it, too.

It's so important for senior employees to help reinforce the team culture, especially if they've been around longer than their manager.
But it sounds like some of your employees have gotten too comfortable and lost their drive.
    That's exactly it! They're complacent.

    drive: 干劲
    complacent: 自满的

Our team is doing an okay job, but the KPIs I've gotten from my boss demand a great job.
I feel stuck. And that, Nicole, is why I'm moving to Greece.
Greg, you're too ambitious to spend all day getting drunk on a beach.
What you need to do is find a way to motivate these employees.

    stuck: stick, stuck, stuck, 粘住
    ambitious: 有志向的

I've told them how much I value them.
But since I'm a new manager, it's hard to get them to listen when I say they need to put in more effort.
    I feel like a step-parent.
I'm well liked, but I have no real authority.
    I understand how that feels.
But how can you tell someone who has already mastered their job to do it better?

    step-parent: 继父母

Your senior employees have been here for too long.
They need new challenges in order to stay motivated.
I should talk to them about their goals for the future.
Yeah. Find out what your employees' development goals are and help them reach them.
If I were to guess, I'd say that most of them would probably like a promotion.
No one wants to stay in the same job forever.

You are definitely onto something here.
And by offering to help them grow, they'll be more motivated to work harder.
Definitely. Sometimes being a good leader means being a good negotiator.
    Nicole, you're amazing.
I am going to set up some one-on-one meetings this week and breathe some life back into this team.
    Thanks for talking to me.
    Anytime!
