    Day1

    Chapter5

From then on, in response to changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution and social and political movements, the government started to take responsibility for education.

in response to changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution and social and political movements,这句
    • in response to (changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution and social and political movements)
      括号里的都是in response to 的宾语
      in response to 对...
    • changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution and social and political movements
      brought about :引起
by the Industrial Revolution and social and political movements
      -- the Industrial Revolution:工业革命
    • the government started to take responsibility for education
      the government
      started to
      take responsibility for education:承担教育的责任

In the 1960s, comprehensive schools were introduced, which ended the division between grammar schools, where the most academically capable pupils were sent to prepare for university, and vocational schools, where the less successful pupils were sent to learn a trade.

①In the 1960s, comprehensive schools were introduced, ②which ended the division between grammar schools, ③where the most academically capable pupils were sent to prepare for university, ④and vocational schools, where the less successful pupils were sent to learn a trade.
    • ①In the 1960s, comprehensive schools were introduced, ②which ended the division between grammar schools and vocational schools.
    • comprehensive schools were introduced
    • ②which ended the division between grammar schools,
      从句,应该是宾语从句,which指代comprehensive schools were introduced,
    • ③where the most academically capable pupils were sent to prepare for university,
the most academically capable pupils were sent to grammar schools to prepare for university.

When children finish their schooling at 16, they are required to take a national examination, the General Certificate of Secondary Education(GCSE), which certifies that they have achieved the standard expected after 11 years of compulsory education.

①When children finish their schooling at 16, they are required to take a national examination GCSE, ②which certifies that they have achieved the standard expected after 11 years of compulsory education.

Oxford and Cambridge dated from the 12th and 13th centuries, while the Scottish universities of St. Andrews, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen were found in the 15th and 16th centuries.

    1. while

In a clause beginning with while that refers to the future, use the
    present tense, not ‘will’.

I will enjoy my fame while it lasts (NOT 不说 while it will last).

Schools in the north tend to be better equipped, while those in the
    south are relatively poor.

    4

in spite of the fact that 虽然,尽管

While never a big eater, he did snack a lot.

While there was no conclusive evidence, most people thought he was
    guilty.

    5

    while I’m/you’re etc at/about it

used to suggest that someone should do something at the same time that
they do something else spoken

Print out what you’ve written, and while you’re at it make a copy for
    me.

    1. date 始于
