第四段
表示对比，一件事情是这样，而另一件事却是那样，我们之前可能会说compared with, different from, instead of, rather than，这里又了一个替换的：as opposed to 不同于。
murky，不光彩的，不可告人的，比如说一个人有着不光彩的过去，with a murky past.
相比于确定主办国的暗箱操作，the competition itself showcases progress. 关注showcase，这个词原本是玻璃橱窗，这里要联想着记忆。玻璃橱窗嘛，用来展示商品，所以showcase作名词的时候，也有“显示优点的场合、机会”之意，作及物动词时，也可以表示“展示”，来个仿写，这出音乐剧展示了她的才华，分别用showcase的动词和名词来表达：
The musical is a showcase for her talents. 注意介词搭配for，a showcase for sth.
The musical showcases her talents.
哪里彰显了进步之处了呢？
首先，球队更赞了。
其次，it also rewards good government. 比赛也是对good government的一种嘉奖。因为，Autocratic regimes can ruthlessly drill track-and-field athletes.
Autocratic regimes 威权国家，专制政体，接下来马上出现了一个替换词dictatorship独裁国家。这两个词就不抠太多了。
再关注drill，反复训练，比如我们经常说的训练有素，除了well-trained之外，也可以说或well-drilled。做名词时也可以表示演习，比如 a fire drill消防演习。
表示对比的句式，这里又出现了一个新的：the contrast between A and B is striking. A和B之间有着鲜明的对比。
这里总结一波，有哪些词和句式可以表示“鲜明的对比”？
as opposed to, 比如本段开头第一句：

这句话用contrast A with B的句型改写的话还可以是：

注意这在语法上是一个祈使句。

on the other hand，比如：
When the girls go shopping, they mainly buy clothes and cosmetics. The boys, on the other hand, tend to purchase computer games or gadgets.女生购物时主要买衣服和化妆品，而男生往往会买电脑游戏或小器具。
这段话里再关注最后一句，顺便复习一下上篇里面讲到的make it的用法，成功做某事，比如make it to the competition入围，make it to the top出人头地，这里是make it to the final打入决赛。
第五段
第一句的写法可以借鉴，赋予了football人格化的动作punish和reward，只不过在翻译的时候要稍微注意一点技巧，不能直译为国际足球惩罚封闭的国家，奖励开放的国家。要根据语境做一些调整：
在国际足球竞技中，封闭的国家落败，而态度更开放更国际化的国家胜出。
在职场中，没有能力的人往往在晋升中不被考虑，这个“不考虑”就可以用pass over，比如说，Those unqualified will be passed over for promotion.
这段话里也用了pass over，when picking team managers, wise countries pass over their national heroes 在选择球队主教练时，明智的国家放弃了本国的英雄人物。
好，选出了主教练，有了齐备的队伍，就要派队伍参赛了，这个“派”可以用哪个动词呢？
Field, field teams派出队伍参赛，field做及物动词时，意思是使某人参加竞赛、选举、战斗。比如我们说推举候选人参加选举，field candidates for the election。宾语直接用你要派出战斗的人。
再来看队伍一词，除了team，这里还用了替换词squad，这个词特别指为参加体育竞赛而组织的运动队球队，比如参加此次世界杯的德国队the German World Cup squad。
squad还可以指专门处理某类犯罪的警察分队，比如BBC就拍了一个名为Bomb Squad的纪录片，拆弹小组。网上可以搜到。
第六段
这段话的第一句统领全段，how to spot and hone human capital。
hone，这个词可以跟前面的drill一起记忆。之前说drill侧重重复不停的训练，而hone这个词更多侧重磨砺、让技艺精益求精的训练，这个词的原意是在磨刀石上磨，让利器更加锋利。所以引申义也很好理解啦，让原有的技能更加牛逼，比如，提高自己的翻译技能：hone your skills as a translator/interpreter。
接下来这句，我们能get到中文里常说的两个词。
一个天才少年gifted children，天才少年一般就是少年早发，这个“少年早发”这句话里也有体现：make the first cut。
这个词先拿掉first，make the cut可以表示晋级、过关、达标，make the first cut就是在第一轮角逐中就过关的，在这个语境下不就是“少年早发”么？
注意这里的make与昨天的make it to the competition, make it to the top是一样样的，他们还真的是喜欢用make这种万能词啊。那么仿写一下，杀入决赛，晋级最终角逐，刚才说make it to the final，用这个cut的话，还可以是：make the final cut。
与“天才少年”相对的就是大器晚成者 late developer，还可以是late bloomer。结合昨天说的出人头地make it to the top组个句子，就说他50岁才混出头，是个大器晚成者：He is a late developer/bloomer who made it to the top/burst to prominence at the age of 50.
那么如何让大器晚成者也能不泯然众人呢？得培养，这个培养，这里用了turn out，可以表示训练出、培养出，乃至生产出，比如生产优质的产品：to turn out products of high quality
眼下毕业季，乃们的母校培养出了像乃们这种高素质的毕业生，turn out high-calibre graduates。
这个high-calibre再碎碎念下，为什么能用来表达高素质，前两天在微博@福州翻译ivy 上正好科普过这个点，有关注我的微博的童鞋一起来回顾一下：
题外话扯完了，扯回来。
这段话后半部分讲到了美国男足的失败（诶奇怪，怎么不分析一下中国男足），原因在于美国职业足球联赛是一个cartel。这个cartel吼腻害的，卡特尔，同业联盟，指一伙人或多家公司为限制竞争和增加利润而结成的固定价格联盟，比如药业联盟，a drug cartel。
把足球联赛搞成cartel的直接结果是什么呢？
Salaries are capped, and the lower-division teams in which domestic players might develop cannot be promoted.
这句话里有两个词值得好好挖。
一个是cap，很形象的，帽子，戴头上的，引申一下，上限。比如前段时间一直在撕的明星阴阳合同，直接挑衅早些时候国家打击明星天价酬劳的决心，明星片酬上限，a cap on remunerations for stars。当然这个cap也可以做及物动词啦，也是那个意思，限制，而且尤指限制金额。
还有一个词值得挖掘，division。这个词在体育领域指的是按比赛成绩划分的等级，lower-division team就是低级别的球队。
最后总结段落，自然要贡献一两句金句，升华一下文章内涵。
先抠一个词根，-ophile，表示喜欢……的人，爱好……的人，比如亲英者an Anglophile。这里Putinophile亲普京的。
propaganda特指政治目的的宣传。
昨天说到了一个煞风景的人，killjoy，今天就来了一个煞风景的动词disfigure，及物动词，原意是损毁外观。
这句话也很适合拿去英语角侃大山：
So liberal internationalists should enjoy the World Cup, despite the Putinophile propaganda that will no doubt disfigure it from time to time.所以，自由开明的国际主义者应该享受世界杯，尽管亲普京的宣传无疑会不时折损其光彩/煞风景。
接下来这句话不要抠了，直接背，可以直接拿来用的金句：
Football, like life, is gloriously unpredictable.足球，和人生一样，因不可预知而壮美。
回头写作啊口语啊，直接替换主语有没有，比如写个什么鸡汤，说人生就是一场旅途，因不可预知而壮美：

完美替换阿甘正传里那句被人写烂了的台词：Life is like a box of chocolates. You will never know what you're gonna get.
