When a child experiences poverty in childhood, he or she may get both positive and negative influences.
Positive:
1. Poverty teaches children to cherish the things they have, never take things for granted. If they want something, they should work hard for it.
2. They are usually modest and resilient. They could endure hardship and failure.
3. It is easy to feel satisfied about life as it may be already a huge progress considering where they are from.
Negative:
1. They may lack a sense of security in life. They tend to think of things negatively. Strictly speaking, this may not be the problem of poverty, but it mostly happens to children with poor upbringing.
The reasons are quite complicated I guess. Poor people may share somewhat similar personality, for example, they tend to be less flexible, more stubborn, more emotional, more fragile. With such personality, they are less likely to adapt to changes and therefore stuck in poverty for a lifelong time. With this kind of personality, when these people become parents, they are less likely to be wise parents, instead, they blames all kinds of external factors instead of looking inward for solutions to problems. Therefore, the kids are more likely to be emotionally harmed or harshly criticized, which lead to a sense of insecurity in their adult life.
So, poverty itself is not a problem, it is how the parents view poverty constitutes the problem. If parents could live their life with an optimistic and positive attitude, Their children, I believe even though live a poor life, could still be confident and lively, lovely children.
