    Reading journal – On Writing Well

    20171031  Chapter 3~4

    【感想】

    Simplify

    读完第三章,印象最深刻的就是这个单词了。尤其是书中所举的一些例子,比如滥用过渡词,刻意使用自觉“高大上”的复杂的表达,感觉都是说的自己。有时候写完,看着自己的“长篇大论”还沾沾自喜,觉得这是自己胸中有物的表现。现在想起来真惭愧!没有站在读者的角度审视自己的文章,只顾自己说得高兴。

    学习确实是一个痛苦的过程,总是在发现自己做得不够好的地方,希望可以坚持下来。

    1. wishy-washy

    释义:adj.  doesn’t have firm or clear ideas and seems unable to decide what they want  思路不清

    2. profuse

    原文: …business and institutions don’t want it in the reports they send so profusely into the American home…

    释义:adj. produced or existing in large quantities 大量的;过度的

    例句:Profuse sweating is one of the symptoms of heat exhaustion.

    3. layoff

    原文: When the Digital Equipment Corporation eliminated 3,000 jobs its statement didn’t mention layoffs.

    释义:n. a situation where someone has to leave their job, because they are no longer needed.

    同义词:redundancy

    拓展: lay off  v. fire 辞退;炒鱿鱼

    造句:Many people were laid off during the Great Depression.
