Question :At what age does one start to be "old"?

I disagree with some of the answers on this page.

I'm too damned cranky to view aging, and my life, as though I'm some sort of ethereal being moving this illusion of life until my energy eventually explodes out in the universe.

With all due respect, I think that's cow-doo-doo. We start dying from the moment we're born. When we start noticing this is when we get old. I didn't notice this until I was somewhere north of 66.

Sixty-five, I still felt like a teenager. I was healthy, I could walk ten miles up and down some pretty steep hills, get up the next day and do it again.

Sixty-six is when the arthritis began. Shocked, I was completely shocked. How could I be in so much pain, and who went and jacked up the hills overnight and made them steeper? What a revolting development that was.

I found a good arthritis doctor and she gave me a magic pill. I still have occasional sharp pains but it's nothing I can't deal with. At the beginning of 66, I felt 80. At the end, I was feeling about 29.

I'm going to be brutally honest here. I joke on this site all the time about being old. Miss Cranky Pants is my alter ego for heaven's sake. Get ready guys, cause here it comes: I'm not old. I'm not young either. I'm closer to the ceiling than I am to the floor, but I'm still kicking up my heels and dancing like a fool.

There's an expression that goes something like this:

Love like you’ve never been hurt.

Sing as though no one can hear you.

    Dance like nobody’s watching,

and live everyday like it's your last.

Love like you've never been hurt.

That's for people who've had their hearts broken and think their life is over. It isn't. Older people know that. It's happened to them so many times and they've survived, that they know they can love again as if they've never been hurt even if they have.

That's one checkmark for me in plus column.

Sing as though no can hear you.

I can't sing a note. I'm pitchy as they say on American Idol and I sound like a cat in great distress. Anyone who hears me is also in great distress.

Do you think I care? Not one bit. I sing all the time to music. Damn the cats.

That's a checkmark for me in the plus column.

Live everyday as if it's your last.

No, no, no. Live everyday as if it's your first. I refuse to focus on last. Whoever said that was full of crap, I mean bullsh-t, no, I mean that they didn't know what they were talking about, and we've all accepted this pithy statement as though it were true. I'm born anew every morning.

One more checkmark for me in the plus column.

    Dance like nobody's watching.

I saved this one for last. I never thought I could do it.

Really? Start dancing in the middle of the street like no one can see you?

I cleaned out the refrigerator in the garage after my husband turned it up so high that the coke cans exploded. Have you ever seen the inside of a refrigerator where that's happened? A frigging mess doesn't even begin to describe.

It was a warm day and I knew I had two choices. I could do it with anger energy, or dance like no one was watching.

I bought out my portable speaker, opened up the garage door, hooked it up to my iPhone and blasted all my favorite music as I danced between the dirty refrigerator and the concrete sink. This was our second fridge and it was out in the garage.

People smiled when they walked by. People gawked as they walked by and one of my neighbors came in and danced with me.

That's when I knew what age was all about.

One more checkmark for me in the plus column.

Feeling old is like my refrigerator.

If you're not dancing, all you're going to end up with is a dirty fridge.

Come on honey. Turn up the cold up again. I feel like dancing tonight.
