Good morning friends!
It's still Saturday for me here. Have you tried doing nothing for a day? Well, I just did. I haven't done this for a long time!
After the hard beach volleyball games on Friday night, I am hurting and trying to recover. It's enjoyable to just relax for a day. I did watch a Ted talk video though. It was about creative writing.
The speaker was a screenplay writer whose achievements included some animation movies such as "Finding Nemo", "Ice Age" and etc.
He began his talk with a story. When he vacationed in a small town in Scotland while drinking in a bar, an old local guy named McGregor chatted with him.
The guy said, "You see, this is the only bar in town. McGregor built it. Do you see that pier outside of that window? McGregor helped built it. Did they mention his name anywhere in town, No! Only he f*cked one goat!"
The audience began laughing so hard after this. The story was so funny because the old guy (McGregor) thinks he did so much for the town but didn't get the recognition he deserved, only because of the "f*cked one goat", a small mistake he made, sort of.
The speaker further said, "Storytelling is joke-telling." Your story needs to be funny. Also, you have to make the audience care about your story.
There were several other key points for creative writing:
"Unified order of 2 + 2", which means make your audience work for their meals. Make them figure out what's going to happen instead of telling them.
"Characters must have spine". Your characters must have what they truly believe, must have their driving force, the motives.
"Drama is anticipation mingled with uncertainty." Don't give up the answers so easily. Keep your audience guessing.
That's all I could gather from this Ted Talk. I hope you will also learn something from this, too.
Have a great Sunday and hopefully, celebrate Father Day! Cheers!
