ARBOR/PERGOLA
Arbor is the Latin word for "tree," and many medieval arbors were outdoor rooms made of closely grouped trees that created a leafy retreat. The Romans planted evenly spaced trees and trained grapevines to grow upon them to create a woven network of garlands that hung from tree to tree. This traditional practice is still in existence in areas of rich volcanic soil.
Arbor also refers to a passageway of columns supporting a trellis roof on which vines are intertwined.
Pergola is an Italian word that is derived from the Latin pergola. Ancient Roman pergolas were structures that usually supposed grapevines. Pergola also refers to a projection or shed that has been added to a house.
