Day 12

1. Words and phrases

1)  That thing must have cost a fortune.

Cost a fortune: spend large amount of money.

e.g.: Shipping that stuff from USA, it cost him a fortune.

2)  At about 6:00, all the relatives cleared out.

Clear out: to leave a place, usually quickly.

e.g.: Please clear this place out immediately, we need to do a CPR for this guy.

3)  Rowley’s parents have a lot of money, so I can always count on them for a good gift.

Count on: to rely or depend on.

e.g.: You couldn’t count on him for this matter. He doesn’t have sense of responsibility.

4)  In case you’re wondering what I’m doing in my room at 9:00 pm on New Year’s Eve, let me fill you in.

Fill in: to supply what is lacking.

e.g.: After a few days absent, she filled me in about what’s happening around here.

5)  Earlier today, me and Manny were horsing around in the basement.

Horse around: 哄闹, 胡闹

e.g.: Please stop horsing around and get back to work.

2.  Sentences

1)  I didn’t have the heart to tell Dad that I kind of lost interest in the whole weight-lifting thing when the wrestling unit ended last week.

e.g.: I don’t have the heart to tell my Mom that I sort of lost interest in learning piano.

2)  I kind of decided to throw in the towel for this Christmas, and I headed up to Rowley’s house.

e.g.: I wanted to throw in the towel for the stressful test, but I ended up becoming more and more worrying.

3.  Dairy

Today, I attended my daughter’s parent meeting. I was glad that she was doing not bad at school. But I am little bit worry that she is sitting with the girl, called Lucy,  always horsing around and has bad behavior. After the meeting, all the parents cleared out, I talked her teacher into changing the seat. The teacher said the reason that my daughter was arranged to sit with Lucy  was that she was counting on my daughter to give a positive influence on Lucy. Hopefully, my daughter won’t mess up.
