《纽约客》（The New Yorker）是一份美国文艺类杂志。杂志中，有很多相当优秀的艺术评论。这样一份充满文艺气息的杂志，就连关于科学研究的文章，也写得非常“艺术”：
It is fashionable to think of Freud as a fantasist who was hopelessly unscientific in his methods and conclusions, but, in recent years, state-of-the-art neuroscientific research has begun to corroborate many fundamental Freudian insights.
以上是一篇有关神经系统科学文章中的一句话。句中用“state-of-the-art”来形容“neuroscientific research”，容易让人产生“艺术性研究”的误会。但事实上，“state-of-the-art”的意思中没有包含任何“艺术”的成分，而是指“最先进的；顶尖的；达到最高水准的，高水平的”，即“the highest level of development, as of a device, technique, or scientific field, achieved at a particular time”。
因此，上面那句话应该翻译为：现在的流行看法是，弗洛伊德是一位幻想家，其方法和结论毫无科学性可言。但是最近几年，高水平的神经系统科学研究开始支持弗洛伊德的重要思想。
虽然“state-of-the-art”的意思中没有“艺术”，但从中我们可以看出艺术在人们心中的地位。的确，如果一件事物可以被称作“艺术品”，那么它便算得上是一个非常优秀的成果。英文中，也把这样的事物叫作“work of art”，意思是“a good result of one's efforts”。
例如，Your report was a real work of art. Very well done.
其实，不仅仅是写报告，我们做任何事都可以像创造艺术品一样。如果达到了这个境界，我们就是“have something down to a fine art”。
这是什么意思呢？其实就是我们汉语中经常说的“学到家”或“到了炉火纯青的地步”。用英文解释就是“learn through experience how to do something perfectly”。
时间管理不是谁都能很好地掌握，但如果你已经很擅长管理自己的时间了，你就可以说：I found it difficult to organize the timetables at first, but now I’ve got it down to a fine art.
最后，我们来看一个和“艺术”有关的习语：art is long and life is short。
说了这么多“艺术”的好处，想必大家应该认同这种说法。
一个年近半百的人决定静下心来好好画画，他可能会说：As I've gotten older, I've been painting more because I know that art is long and life is short.
