    1.a stuffed shirt:

2.to give you the shirt off one's back:

从字面上来解释,to give you the shirt off his back 就是把他的衬衣从背上脱下来给你。 所以,to give you the shirt off his back指尽自己的力量帮助别人。

例如:of course dad gets mad at me sometimes for no good reason. but if i ever need it, i know he would give me the shirt off his back.

又如:peter never says very much. but when he hears about somebody who's sick in the hospital or lost his job, he's always the first to put his hand in his pocket and bring out money to help. yes, sir, he's the kind of man who'd give you the shirt off his back.

    3.lose one‘s shirt:

4.to keep your shirt on :不要紧张

5.bring down the house=bring the house down:

    6.like a house on fire:

like a house on fire。 习惯用语like a house on fire已经有两百多年的历史了。

3:This movie has everything: an exciting story, fantastic special effects and top popular stars. So it's going like a house on fire: the first week it was out it took in 25 million dollars.

    这里的like a house on fire用来比喻迅速成名。

    Like a house on fire也可以带有浪漫情调。

4:I was worried that Joe and Sally are so different they wouldn't like each other. But they're getting along like a house on fire and tonight Joe says he's going to ask her to marry him.

    这里的like a house on fire用来描述爱情的迅速发展。
