美国历史上有两位罗斯福家族总统，一般我们说的这位是罗斯福，名字缩写FDR。本文以小故事开头。士兵觉得认识总统（实际不是用as if），总统事实不认识他，但是很多美国人民都是这样想的。

When Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in 1945, a young soldier stood in front of the White House remembering（缅怀） his president. “I felt as if I knew him. I felt as if he knew me – and I felt as if he liked me.” He was saying what so many Americans were feeling.

FDR, as he was called, had been president since 1933（过去完成时）. He was elected four times, serving for twelve years. This was longer than any other president（单数） before or since.（看上去是比较级，实际是最高级）二战后确立美国总统只能做两届，罗斯福是特例。

When Franklin took office（就职）, there were lots of problems waiting for him(现在分词后置做problem的定语). Banks were failing（关门）. People were out of work. Many（代词，很多人） had lost their homes. This was the Great Depression.
