eBay Australia boss warns new retail market players they should 'partner, not come in and seek to disrupt and destroy' eBay澳大利亚老板提醒新的零售市场参与者他们应该“寻求合作,而不是进来破坏”

An e-commerce OG, eBay was founded in the height of Silicon Valley’s mid-nineties dotcom bubble and in 2019 will celebrate its 20th year down under. “eBay still dominates Australia’s e-commerce market … but Amazon is nipping at its heels.” “eBay is still seen as the trusted retailer in the minds of consumers.”

Amazon Prime — a product the analyst says the e-commerce giant will centre its Australian operations around — has reached a 7% market penetration in just one year since launching in June 2018.

“To build trust with consumers you have to drive a level of familiarity … you have to deliver on your promises,” eBay’s Tim MacKinnon said. “If you want to be successful in this market you have to partner, not come in and seek to disrupt and destroy the Australian retail landscape.”

An Amazon spokesperson said the company is satisfied with its Australian rollout so far. “In fact, globally, products from sellers make up more than half of units sold in our stores. We invest heavily to help sellers accelerate their businesses, and work hard to make our store a great place for brands.

Key skills your staff need if you want to build a higher-performing workplace 哪些是建立一个高效的工作场所需要的关键技能?

TAFE Enterprise conducted a survey of managers from more than 400 businesses with 100 or more employees in a range of industries to compile its Skills And Australian Business Report 2018 and find out - what areas are most important to the modern workplace?

    Technical skills

A full 49% of respondents to the survey realised that training in technical skills — like data analysis, programming or the latest research techniques specific to your industry — is crucial to their company’s productivity.

    IT skills

Yes, IT skills do fall under technical skills, but 38% of responders feel they are important enough to get their own category.

    Management & leadership

Coming in just behind technical skills in importance is management and leadership training, with 47% of employers focusing their staff training in this area. This is a reflection on the rising demand for soft skills and includes things like teamwork,  written and verbal communication, adaptability and problem-solving.

    Customer service

Despite a recognition of the ever-increasing demand from customers for a better experience, only 19% of respondents feel customer service is a key focus of training. The rising expectations of this customer centricity places pressure on organisations to raise customer service standards.

    How to train staff

According to the survey, about 35% of skills required for jobs in all industries are expected to change in the next few years, so it’s time to start looking for a better option. Time-poor managers need to look for customised training programs that align with their key business priorities. One size does not fit all here.

Epic Games, the maker of 'Fortnite', acquired teen chat app Houseparty

    “Fortnite”的制造商Epic Games收购了青少年聊天应用程序Houseparty

“Fortnite” creator Epic Games announced its acquisition of Houseparty, a social networking app for group video-chats, on Wednesday. The price of the acquisition was not announced, but the unexpected deal immediately sparked speculation about what the maker of the most popular video game might do with the teen-focused chat app.

Fortnite has become a worldwide gaming phenomenon, allowing up to 100 people anywhere in the world to connect online and play in the same round. Houseparty has been installed by 35 million users via App Store and Google Play, with 40 per cent of those users outside of the US.

“Joining Epic is a great step forward in achieving our mission of bringing empathy to online communication,” Houseparty CEO Sima Sistani said in the press release. “We have a common vision to make human interaction easier and more enjoyable, and always with respect for user privacy.”

Houseparty will not be collapsed into Epic Games. Users with both Houseparty and Epic Games accounts will not be able to combine their accounts, and Houseparty will remain available as a standalone platform.

While Fortnite does have an in-game voice chat function, many players opt to use independent group chat programs to communicate with fellow gamers. The group chat networks, like Houseparty and Discord, have the added benefit of existing outside of the game as social media platforms. Epic Games made nearly $US2.5 billion through “Fortnite” in 2018. The acquisition of Houseparty could yield a larger female demographic of Fortnite players.
