Some accounts of the past simply do not need any commentary.
The famous Shaafi’i scholar, Abul Hasan Al-Maawaardi who died year 450AH, hid all of his books that he’d authored during his lifetime.
When he was on his deathbed, he called upon a person whom he trusted, and said to him:
الكُتُبُ الَّتِي فِي المَكَان الفُلاَنِي كُلُّهَا تَصنِيفِي وَإِنَّمَا لَمْ أُظْهِرهَا لأَنِّي لَمْ أَجِدْ نِيَّة خَالصَةً فَإِذَا عَايَنْتُ المَوْتَ وَوَقَعْتُ فِي النزع فَاجعل يَدَكَ فِي يَدي فَإِنَّ قبضتُ عَلَيْهَا وَعَصَرْتُهَا فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يُقبلْ مِنِّي شَيْءٌ مِنْهَا فَاعْمَدْ إِلَى الكُتُب وَأَلقهَا فِي دِجْلَة وَإِن بَسَطْتُ يَدي فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهَا قُبِلَتْ.
“All of the books in such and such place are my authorship, however I chose not to make them public because I am unable to determine what my intention is. So, when death approaches me and the pangs of death arrive, place your hand in mine. If I squeeze it tightly, then I am telling you that my works have not been accepted, so take my books and throw them into the river. If, however, I loosen my grip, then I am telling you that they’ve been accepted.”
His friend said:
“When the pangs of death finally approached him, I placed my hand in his. He loosened his grip, and so his books were published.”

They weren't into book signings.

沙斐仪学派的著名学者أب الحسن الماوردي（归真于伊历450年）隐藏了他一生中所有的著作。
他在弥留之际将一个信任的人唤到他的病榻前，并且对他说:“这些那些地方的书都是我亲笔所作。但是，我并不想将他们公之于众，因为我还没有确定我的举意是什么。所以当死亡来临我的时候，请把你的手放在我的手上。如果我紧握着我的手，那就说明我的作品不会被接受，那么你就把我的书丢进河里。如果我松开了我的手，那就意味着我的作品被（安拉）接受了。”
他的朋友说:“当死亡最终来临之际，我把我的手放在他的手心里，他松开了他的拳头。然后他的著作问世了。”(Siyar A’laam Al-Nubalaa)
