载营魄抱一①，能无离乎？专气致柔②，能如婴儿乎③？涤除玄鉴④，能无疵乎？爱民治国，能无为乎⑤？天门开阖⑥，能为雌乎⑦？明白四达，能无知乎⑧？生之畜之⑨，生而不有，为而不恃，长而不宰，是谓玄德⑩。

精神和形体合一，能不分离吗？聚结精气以致柔和温顺，能像婴儿的无欲状态吗？清除杂念而深入观察心灵，能没有瑕疵吗？爱民治国能遵行自然无为的规律吗？感官与外界的对立变化相接触，能宁静吧？明白四达，能不用心机吗？让万事万物生长繁殖，产生万物、养育万物而不占为己有，作万物之长而不主宰他们，这就叫做“玄德”。
凡产生了的东西，就需要有让其存在的空间。为了让种种东西有存在的空间，心法的基本方式就是要首先让心“空”起来，也就是达到“无”的境界，然后让种种东西在心中有序地安排起来。老子以反问的形式列举了几种使心达到“无”然后再进行处理的事情。这种列举可以是无限的，然而方法就只是使心达到“无”的境界一种而已。“无”的境界与宇宙产生前的境界在逻辑本质上是一致的。
爱民治国：“爱”字在构字上是用手把一切抓到心中的样子。“民”是“国”中的基本元素。“国”指的是宇宙大方，“治国”则是推演宇宙大方的意思。“玄德”指的是隐藏在深处的产生宇宙一切的本质规律。

In embracing the One with your soul,
Can you never forsake the Tao?
In controlling your vital force to achieve gentleness,
Can you become like the new-born child?
In cleansing and purifying your Mystic vision,
Can you strive after perfection?
In loving the people and governing the kingdom,
Can you rule without interference?
In opening and shutting the Gate of Heaven,
Can you play the part of the Female?
In comprehending all knowledge,
Can you renounce the mind?
To give birth, to nourish,
To give birth without taking possession,
To act without appropriation,
To be chief among men without managing them---
This is the Mystic Virtue.
