Plagiarism is a quite common phenomenon in universities nowadays with the development of the internet. To solve this problem, it's essential that we should clarify the causes and effects of plagiarism in universities.
Why do college students plagiarize in their assignments? Firstly, due to lacking sufficient knowledge or ability to deal with the assignment efficiently, they choose to copy and paste other people's works. Considering the deadline of the task, they do this without any hesitation. Moreover, personally, they believe that they just borrow several lines from others, which cannot be claimed as stealing. In other words, they have no idea about what plagiarism is and the negative effect it will cause. Lastly, some students have a strong motivation to get a high score in the performance, so they would rather plagiarise others' "good" work.
What effects will it cause? Firstly, it affects the reputation of a student. Plagiarism accusations are serious, and you can get suspended or even expelled because of that. Even if you remain in college after such an ethics offense, your grades will be lower due to that, and you may fail your course as well. Secondly, it might affect your school's credibility. In the job market, when HR knows about your school's reputation, you might not get the offer so quickly. Thirdly, if a student submits plagiarised homework, he or she risks damaging the relationship between the teacher and the student. In a long term, it does no good for the student's academic performance in school.
Facing all these causes and negative effects of plagiarism, it's time that schools should get students well-educated on this serious issue immediately.
