The character of Sir. Robert Chiltern remind me of the people in our society. Both of us expect for the ideal life, and try to be to person who we want to be. We live a life carefully and try to protect what we have. But life can not be decided by us, we have to make an inevitable compromise to the society. Although we hurt in reality life, love always cure us.

In the novel, when Sir. Robert Chiltern was young, he thought money and power is every thing, and his creed is that "power, power over other men, power over the world, was the one thing worth having, the one supreme pleasure worth knowing, the one joy one never tired of, and that in our century only the rich possessed it." He disappointed to the society but he adjust to it, and he used the weapon of the society that he could find- money to fight against the world. When he has power, he thinks he has freedom, and he lives an ideal life. People admire him because his perfect, his wife love him because he worthy for love. People can not accept his mistakes. He attains those kind of things through many efforts, so he does not want to lose fame, money, and power easily, so when Mrs. Cheveley put up her requirement, he made a huge mind struggle, whether he should made a compromise to her.

His appearance is a gentleman, but actually he is an ambition man, just as he said," when I was old, perhaps. When I was tired, worn out, disappointed. I wanted my success when I was young. Youth is the time for success. I could wait." Perhaps, he shows his inner word because Mrs. Cheveley appeared. He shows his nervous to lose all from him now, he afraids to lose everything over a horrible scandal, and afraids to be hounded from public life. He hates the rules of the society, however, he enjoys the fruit when he wins the life. His action is not consistent with what he said. At the beginning, although he said he think that his wife is more important than fame, he unwilling to tell the truth to her. For his friend Lord Goring, although Lord Goring is helping him, he does not trust his friend sometimes. When he found Mrs. Cheveley in Lord Goring's house, he lose his temper, he said, "You are mad. What have I to do with her intrigue with you? Let her remain your mistress! You are suited to each other. She corrupt and shameful you, false as a friend, treacherous as an enemy even-" In this kind of society, he already changed himself potentially.

Sir. Robert Chiltern loves her husband deeply. When we fall in love, we also imagine our mate is perfect. In love, we always want to show the best aspect to each othe,so Sir. Robert Chiltern the same as others, he does not want to let his wife know the mistake that he made when he was young. And Lady Chiltern thinks her husband is a genius, a real English gentleman and an Ideal mate. so when she knows that her husband has saled political secrets to make fortune, she is totally lost mind and she thinks her dream is broken. However, I think what Sir Robert Chiltern said is reasonable, he said,"That was your mistake, there was your error. The error all women commit. Why can't you women love us, faults and all? why do you place us on monstrous pedestal? We have all feet of clay, women as well as men; but when wemen love women, we love them knowing their weaknesses, their follies, their imperfections… that love should come to cure us… true love should pardon…"(p80-81) Just as he said, if we love a person, we should love all aspects of the person, and if our mate hurted, we should company him or her. There is no Ideal mate, and the person who we beloved is perfect. Luckily, they finally know that they are both important to each other, and love each other deeply. Sir. Robert Chiltern is willing to resign and regards his wife more important than his political carrer. And Lady Chiltern accepts the imperfection of her husband and support he to accept the possition in the cabinet.

Life is full of dangerous, life is full of beautiful scenery, using heart to live a life.
